Answers
Answer:
Mrs. Thompson when confronted her husband Joe Thompson, with regard to Maggie was angered and astonished to see Maggie. She referred to Maggie as a ' sick brat '. She was in flame and she stood face to face with him with a vinegar temper after Mr Thompson laid Maggie on the bed. She was at first, angry and continually questioned Joe about the fate of the child. Her loneliness and lack of a child had worsened her temperament and made her a cold-hearted person.
After Maggie came into their house Mrs. Thompson's behaviour started changing. She started having affection, love and pity for the poor child. She further asked her husband to let Maggie stay with them. Mrs Thompson is hard-hearted at the beginning of the story. She scorns at her husband for bringing the invalid child home, but she is transformed at the end. It appears as if the woman had turned bitter earlier because of being childless, but as soon as the love of a child touches her, she is transformed.
Maggie and her love changed Mrs Thompson. The sweetness of that sick child, looking ever to her in love, patience, and gratitude, was as honey to her soul, and she carried her in her heart as well as in her arms like a precious burden. The presence of Maggie changed her completely from an illtempered and rude woman to a kind and loving lady.
