1. Rowlatt Act passed in 1919, again authorised the British to arrest anyone without a fair trial in the court, aroused much anger and public awakening the act sought to give enormous powers to the British.
2. While the protests were on, police on 10th April openly fired on a peaceful procession, which provoked widespread attacks by the mob on banks, railway stations followed which a martial law was imposed.
3. In an attempt to protest against government’s repressive measures a meeting was organized at Jallianwala Bagh on 13th April 1919, while some came to attend annual Baisakhi fair. Many people were unaware of the martial law and became victims of indiscriminate firing by General Dyer. Killing hundreds the incident let loose a reign of terror.
