The Chauri Chaura incident took place in Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur district of the United Province on 4 February 1922.
1. On 2 February the protesters who were protesting against the high meat prices were badly beaten up by the local police.
2. Their leaders were arrested and put in the lock up in the Chauri Chaura police station.
3. So they gathered in front of the police station on 4 February and demanded the release of their leaders.
4. The police fired warning shots in the air. When the situation could not be controlled the police opened fire. So the protesters set fire to the police station in retaliation and 22 to 23 policemen died.
