What was the reason behind the creation of linux?

According to its creator, Linus Torvalds, it was just for fun, but also mainly to teach himself the 386 instruction and feature sets.

Erroneously, a lot of FSF types like to claim Linux was created to provide the world with a free and open source operating system, but at no point has anyone involved in the actual creation of Linux ever stated this as a motivation.
