What was the reason for breaking down of the family as an institution?

The notion of family has not broken down as an institution. What has broken down is the institution of joint family. The main reason for the breaking down of the joint family was that different members of the joint family may have employment in different parts of the country.  As a result, it is not possible for all members of the joint family to live together.
