The reason for the implementation of the subsidiary alliance system by Lord Wellesley was mainly to conquer the Indian states easily without any war.

It was a “Non-Intervention Policy” that was used by Lord Wellesley. Wellesley was the Governor-General (time period -1798-1805) for establishing the British rule in India.

As per the system, the rulers in India must agree to pay the subsidy to British for maintenance of the British army.
