the reason for lord ullin's wrath was her daughter who likes a person which he did not. she ran away with him.
it was changed to wailing as he could not see his daughter drowning and was ready to forgive her.

The daughter of Lord ullin ran away with her lover, Lord Ullin did not like it and he ordered to kill the man. He chased them with his armed men for three days, he saw they were escaping in a boat, he asked a boatman to catch them and Ullin paid for it. But when he saw his daughter dying in the storm, his fatherly love for her replaced his anger with wailing.
