What was the reason of Thorin’s obsession for Arkenstone and what was his plan to recover it from Bard?

You can think of the Arkenstone as a crown the king has to wear to be able to get the throne. The dwarves would not accept him as their rightful king without it. That's the reason Thorin wanted the Arkenstone. He needed it to restore the kingdom of Erabor to it's former glory.
