What was the Renaissance stringed instrument which was bowed with a circular “bow” which was cranked or turned by the right hand and in constant contact with the strings. All Fingered notes were played by the left hand. THe instrument was held on the lap in a seated position. It was played by Spencer Tracy in a 1930’s film whose title I don’t recall. Possibly captain courageous.
