Travancore at the time of accesion to Indian union was second richest princily state in India. The problem with travancore was that maharja did not want to join india unlike other parts of india majority of the people supported the maharja but diwan of travancore CP Ramaswamy even when efficient was authoritarian thinking that diwans rule will continue if travancore remained independent there was an attempt to murder diwan, the attempt failed but diwan lost his nose. After somedays the diwan sighned instrument of acession & travancore joined Indian union.
