The result of ethnic diversity was that the Belgian Constitution was amended 4 times between 1970 to 1993 to make the following changes:-

1. The Constitution made it mandatory that the number of French speaking and Dutch speaking ministers in the Belgian constitution is equal. Also, many important laws require the support of majority of members of both communities to get passed.

2. The state government has been given many powers of the central government. The state government is not subordinate to the central government.

3. Brussels has a separate parliament where there are equal representatives from both communities - Dutch and French speaking.

4. There is another government called community government. It is elected by people belonging to various linguistic communities no matter where they live. This government takes the decisions related to educational, cultural and language related issues.
