the peace negotiations in geneva which followed the french defeat resulted in the the division of the country.the incidents that followed turned veitnam into a battlefield bringing destruction to the people as well as the environment
ho chi minh and the communists took up the north part and bao dai's regime took up the south part of vietnam.bao dai's regime was overthrown by a coup led by ngu dinh diem.he built an authoritarian and repressive government.anyone who opposed him bwas called a  communist and was jailed  and killed.he retained ordinance 10 , a french law that protected christianism but outlawed buddhism. his government was opposed by the people under the wide banner of the national liberation front or the theNLF .
the ho chi minh government supported the NLF. us watched this alliance with fear. it decided to intervene decisively sending in troops and arms.
