The British government came out with all the powers to suppress the revolt. The sepoys fought the battle with their limited strength for four months. Then, the sepoys had to retreat. On 25th September British troops regained Delhi. Bahadur Shah was arrested. Nana Saheb lost the battle of Kanpur. His commander Tantia Topi continued the fight up to April, 1859 A.D. and surrendered to the British force. Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi lost her life in the battleground. Kunwar Singh, Bakht Khan of Bihar, Bahadur Khan, Moulavi Ahmed of Faizabad lost their lives one after the other. By the end of 1859 A.D. the British power was reestablished in troubled areas.

The rule of The East India Company ended with Queen Victoria's Proclamation of November 1, 1858. She assumed the title of the Empresa of India. The British Crown took over the administration of India. A secretary of State was appointed by the British Parliament to look after the governance of India with the help of council. The Governor-General was given the title of Viceroy- The Representative of The British Crown.
The British reorganisd the army to prevent any future revolt. The policy of ruthless conquests and annexations of Indian Territories was given up. The Indian Princes were given the assurance that their states would not be annexed and were granted the rigjt of adoption.
By the end of 1859, British Authority in India was fully re- established. But the revolt proved to be the first great struggle and its heroes became household names in the country.
