Answer:
After the assassination of then P.M. Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, a wave of riots against Sikhs erupted in the city of Delhi. In the ensuing violence, many lost their lives and were displaced from their homes.
In Punjab, the Khalistani movement, aiming for an independent Punjab, was already at its peaks and after Indira was murdered for her attempts to thwart the rebels, and riots killed many more Sikhs, rage spread like a wildfire among many Sikhs against the injustice being done to their people and culture. Although the movement fizzled out later, the 1984 riots played a key role in the shaping of the movement.
