In words of Syed Ahmed Khan, "The missionaries’ great help and energetic efforts must always be recognized as a prominent factor in intellectual progress of India.”

Christian missionaries came in India in 1833 after the Charter Act allowed them to spread the knowledge and introduce ne religion in India.

The role that Christian missionaries played in the development of Education in India were:-

1. The missionaries converted the Bible into regional and vernacular languages so that everybody could read that. In this way, they promoted the sense of reading at the Indian masses.

2. Due to the advent of missionaries, the concept of Jesuit colleges came to India which helped many Indians to complete their higher education without going to abroad.

3. The Christian Missionaries also followed the Girls or female education in Indian society which were not given much importance before.

4. In order to spread Christianity, they went door to door and even on the hilly areas. That's how they promoted education even to the tribals isolated from the mainstream.

5. With the effort of these missionaries, the Charter Act of 1853 included a budget particularly for the imparting of Education to the Indians.
