Jacobians were from the less wealthy section of the society. They included small shopkeepers, artists such as shoe maker, watch maker, daily wage workers and many more people. Their leader was Maximilian Robespierre.
They wanted to make a new identity of their own. They wanted to set themselves apart from the fashionable sections of the society specially the nobles. After imprisoning the royal family, they declared France as a republic in 1793.
The period from 1793-1794 was referred as a period of reign of terror because at that time France was being ruled by Maximilian Robespierre and he was ruling France, not as a democracy, but as a dictatorship. He issued many unfair laws such as:
• High quality meat and bread were not allowed to eat by people.
• The people who seemed to be enemies to him, he guillotined them.
• Use of expensive white flour was banned and all people were forced to eat equality bread (a loaf made of whole wheat).
• All churches were closed or were converted to barracks or offices.
But all this came to an end when Robespierre was himself guillotined and punished as the way he used to punish people, by the orders of the court in July 1794.
