The swallow acted as the eyes and ears of the Happy Prince and brought him information about his kingdom. The swallow also acted as the prince’s messenger and delivered gold and rubies to the poor in the kingdom. But most all the swallow is the prince’s true friend who stayed with the prince instead of flying south for the winter and died at his feet. The swallow showed the prince the harsh conditions the poor people in his kingdom had to endure while at the same time showed the prince how beautiful life can be with his stories about foreign lands. The swallow in his short time with the prince showed the prince so much more about life than when the prince was in his castle. The swallow treated the prince like a true friend which is someone the prince never had in his castle when he was alive.
