In this alpha ray scattering experiment a small amount of radioactive element is taken in the cavity of lead block. A thin beam of alpha-particles is allowed to fall upon a gold foil of 100nm thickness. The thin gold foil has a circular fluorescent zinc sulphide screen around it. When an alpha-particles strikes the screen , a scintillation( a sparkling or sparkle) is produced. By arranging such screen around gold foil ,the scattering of alpha-particles in all directions can be noticed:
Observations;
Most of the alpha-particles (99%) passed through the gold foil without any deflection (turn aside) from their original path.
A few of the alpha-particles are deflected fairly at large angles while some are deflected through small angles.
A very few alpha-particles '1 in 20000' or by 180° are deflected back along their path.
