The scene that Bama saw at the market place changed her life forever. While ambling leisurely towards home, she saw one very elderly member of her community behaving very fawningly. That elder was carrying some eatable for the landlord very carefully, trying to hold the packet from the thread and ensuring no physical touch to the packet. Bama wanted to laugh at it. She did not know what it meant.
After she reached home she told her brother what she had seen. He explained to her that they belonged to a community that was considered lower caste. So, people from upper caste refrained from touching them; if anyone touched any member of their community they would think they would get polluted. He further told her that since they belonged to lower caste community they were not any given respect and dignity.
This revelation infuriated Bama. She resolved she would fight against this discrimination.
