Answer: The narrator was surprised to see a strange thing, that an elder coming from the direction of the market was having a parcel in his hand . he was holding the parcel with a string attached to it. it was not being funny instead the elder was being discriminated as he belonged to lower castes and he was not being allowed to touch the parcel that contained vaidas for the upper castes.
