During the colonisation period or during the British reign Indians were forced to pay taxes for the salt. salt was a basic necessity of each and every household. Poor could not afford salt and Gandhiji took this as an opportunity to start a civil disobedience movement.

Workers went on strikes and students left the government institutions and no tax is there paid to to British for salt.
