But the nomination of Bhai Lehna by Guru Nanak was regarded as unique, because Guru Nanak himself placed Bhai Lehna as the Guru. His name too was changed from Lehna to Angad, meaning 'a limb' (anga) of the Guru. This gave rise to the idea that the position of the Guru and his disciple (Sikh) is interchangeable.

Bhai Lehna or Guru Angad was not a son of Guru Nanak and yet he was the successor to him as the next Nanak.

Guru Nanak had two sons.

Once Guru Nanak threw a Mug in the mud and asked his sons to pick it up but they refused because it was too dirty.

He then asked Bhai Lehna who happily picked it up cleaned it and served water to Guru Nanak in it.

It is then that he was named the successor and Guru Nanak gave him the title of Guru Angad.
