In the quest to populate the West, the federal government instituted a formal, organized program to remove Native American nations from the lands that white settlers would occupy. The Native Americans were forced (often violently) to leave their homelands and move to government sponsored "reservations". The journey to these reservations was hundreds of miles long. Ill-equipped for the journey and unassisted by the government, many people died.
