I feel myself very honoured while answering this question. Shivaji Maharaj was such a pure hearted personality that one can not imagine.
His first teacher was his mother the great Jijabaisaheb. When Shivaji was a child, as a toddler he learned those values of humanity which today's most leaders in the world fail to understand.
Jijabaisaheb sparked the fire in little Shivba's heart for self-esteem and glory. This was the fire to fight against injustice, exploitation & discrimination faced by people at the hands of mughals. His mother Jijabaisaheb always told him the stories from Ramayan and Mahabharat (the great Indian epics) She made him understand how mughal saltnats oppressed the people. Yes, you read it correctly, saltanats …… there were three of them; Aadilshahi (Bijapur), Qutubshahi (Golconda) & Nizamshahi (Ahmednagar).
Women were abducted, exploited, raped and used in a way that they were nothing more than a commodity. Shivaji Raje who was a young warrior then had a burning lava inside his heart, for the women's disgrace. While he was only sixteen he ordered a punishment to cut off the hands and the legs of a Patil who raped a woman and killed her. (He never had to worry about any kind of vote bank though !!) This kind of punishment is well-known in history as making some one “Chaurangya” Such was his deep concern for women's secured honour and modesty.
Then this famous incident. Once in October 1667, during the raid on Kalyan, the Bijapur Subhedar's i.e Governor's (Mulla Ahmed's) young and beautiful daughter in law, was arrested by a Maratha sardar Aabaji Sondev. Shivaji Maharaj was in Pune at this juncture. Aabaji Sondev send this woman to Pune at the feet of his master along with other monetory treasure/booty. As this was the tradition set by mughals for so many years. But to everyone's surprise Shivaji Maharaj didn't accepted such a present, instead …. on her arrival he exclaimed,”Oh, how nice it would have been if my mother were as fair as you are ! I wish my mother was as beautiful as you.”
“अशीच आमुची आई असती
सुंदर, रूपवती …..
आम्हीं ही सुंदर झालो असतो
वदलें छत्रपती ……।।”
In such words Shivaji Maharaj honoured her by addressing her as “Mother.” He then sent her to her in laws house with apologies for her arrest. From there on he issued a very stern warning that in future no woman should be held as captive nor be made to suffer or be treated as booty on any account, during war or raids.
Such was the Greatness of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. These qualities made him one and only one of his kind.
