THE THREE PRECIOUS PACKETS

1. Niu sought respite from the bitter cold by settling down in front of a fire in the inn and ordered soup and dumplings to feel warm and cosy.

2. The stranger, who was actually a spirit, gave Niu three packets as a token of gratitude as Niu had looked after him the night before at the inn.

3. The instructions in the first packet told Niu to go to the Bodhi Temple. Once he reached there, he found that his worries had been wiped clean. He discovered that the monks at the temple knew his uncle and he was given food and lodging as well as a small fortune of three thousand coins. Niu was ready to lead a comfortable life.
