Shivaji kept twelve forts, along with an area worth an income of 100,000 (1 lakh) huns. Shivaji was required to help the Mughals whenever and wherever required. Shivaji's son Sambhaji was tasked with the command of a 5,000-strong force under the Mughals.

The Mughal army also besiged Rajgarh, the chief seat of power of Sivaji. Ultimately, Sivaji was compelled to sign the treaty of Purandhar with Jaisingh in June 1665. He agreed to surrender to the Emperor 23 forts yielding an annual revenue of four lakhs of Huns.
