The treaty took away 27,000 square miles of European territory, including parts of France, Poland, Denmark and Belgium. Germany also had to give up its entire overseas empire (Kleine-Ahlbrandt 25). Also, the Treaty of Versailles imposed a return of $24 billion, and there was no limit to total idemnity.
