What was what was the cause of matilda's ruin ?how could she have avoided it ?

Answer: matilda borrowed a necklace from her friend to wear to the ball unfortunately she lost it. as the necklace couldn't be found, the loisels had to replace it with a new necklace worth thirty six thousand dollars. this ruined the loisels lives. they became poor and their lives were ruined and it took away ten prime years of their lives matilda could have avoided it by confessing to forestier that she had lost the necklace.
