Woods' despatch of 1857 issued by Charles wood, made major changes in education policy of British. It gave a detailed plan for separate department of education . Universities were setup at the presidency towns of Bombay (now Mumbai), Kolkata, Madra. Institutions for training teachers were also setup & assistance was given to vernacular schools.
