Answer: Zitkala- sa sneaked away from the dining hall in order to save her long hair from being cut. In their culture long hair was venerated and considered auspicious. Short hair was worn either by cowards or mourners. She went upstairs, perhaps to dormitories and hid under the bed in one of them. She had resolved not to let anyone cut her hair.

However, she was searched, found, and dragged out from under the bed. She was tied to the chair and her hair cut. After that she lost all her spirit. She just wanted to run to her mother.

When long hair of Zitkala-Sa is cut, she felt rather indignant and anguished.

She also lost her overall spirit and also felt as very helpless like a puppet.

Zitkala-Sa got this felling of fully being the animal driven by the herder and looked for certain comfort.

She actually moaned in anguish with the hair being nicely shingled similar to the coward.
