The Zollverein was an economic agreement among the 39 German states. It was established in 1833 and took effect in 1834. Known in English as the German Customs Union, the Zollverein was established to encourage and support economic trade among the German states. It provided for the development of new industries and opened new markets for established industries, strengthening all of the states who participated.
