Indian society was a society of discrimination against the people by the people itself based on castes. The four major caste existed in Indan societies were Bramhins, Kshatriyas, Shudras,vaishyas, untouchbales. many social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Periyar ,Vivekanda, Annie Besant and many religious reformers like Atmaram panduranga, Jyotibha Pule , NarayanaGuru strived hard to eradicate this through prohibiting it and by taking various measures to provide equality to untouchables and lower class people.
