In the case of nitrate and hydroxide ions, it is the hydroxide ions that get discharged. An ion is a charged particle made when an atom (or group of atoms) loses or gains one or more electrons, e.g. Na+ and Cl−. ion in solution or hydroxide ions from water will be discharged.
