Hey!

After MBBS, you'll have to appear in various entrance examinations for MD/MS/DM/MCh courses as well as DNB which require 1–3 years of preparation depending on your calibre and grasp.

Conventionally, after cracking the PG entrance examinations, you have to first complete a 3 year residency in MS(General Surgery) or DNB General Surgery, and again crack the MCh or DNB Superspecialty entrance which also includes an interview this time. Then, a 3 year MCh or DNB in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS). Voila! You're a Cardiothoracic surgeon!

The other way is to take up direct 6 year courses of MCh/DNB in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery immediately after MBBS. AIIMS is the only centre offering a direct MCh CTVS as far as I know. DNB is offering 6 year CTVS courses at a lot of multispecialty hospitals across India.

These direct 6 years courses are meant for highly motivated doctors who are ready to commit to a specialty for life right after MBBS.

Hope it sorted your query! Cheers
