Methods to reduce friction to a motion:

  • The surfaces in contact can be polished such that they become smooth and the resistance is reduced.

  • In case of motion in fluids (water and air), the objects can be designed to have a streamlined shape in order to reduce drag and resistance.

  • Use of lubricants and oils fill up the small undulations on the surfaces in contact resulting in smooth sliding of one surface over another.

  • In case of rolling motion , friction can be reduced by use of ball-bearings as in cycles and bikes, etc.
