According to my knowledge

When Britishers came to India they came via crossing Hindu Kush Mountain.
Since we lived after Hindu Kush Mountain they named us as Hindus. They named our religion as Hindu (Sanatan Dharm was our religion). And I think the word Hindi was derived from Hindu. Hence already given by British.
