Answers
Some of the challenges that our Democratic system faces are:
a. Poverty, illiteracy, unemployment continue to hamper the progress of the country.
b. Even though we have established formal equality there exist a gap between theory and practice. Several groups continue to be discriminated. Caste, gender discrimination continues to haunt our society which are surely inimical to progress and development.
c. Rampant corruption, red tapism, delays in the public process acts as a major hindrance.
d. Exploitation of caste, religion for narrow political gains has surely undermined the meaning of democracy.
f. Use of money power, muscle power, vote bank politics during elections again raises misgivings about the democratic success of our country.
g. Rise of many parties, groups leading to conflicting claims and instability.
However, it is these challenges, which can be converted into opportunities.People must realise their strength in terms of rights, liberties that a Democratic system accords ,which allows for participation of the people in a political process.
It is the people who can make system more accountable and responsive to their needs, it the people who can be catalyst of change and not get swayed away by narrow outlook that sought to divide rather than unite.
