The postmaster appeared to be naughty ,not heard and I'll tempered. He was totally insensitive, dull and inexpressive like pumpkin. He behaved with Ali in a humiliating and insulating manner. He called him a pest . However, he is a transformed man in the end . He saw essential human worth of a letter . His suffering father's heart recognized and felt the pangs of separation in Ali's heart for Miriam .He was no longer a naughty and insensitive official but a young father

Going to the post office was a ritual for Ali .There he would observe the peons who came to the post office. Most of them came to receive the letter for their frims .Ali would hear them discussing the scandals and stories of their master .They were smart and young people .They dressed smartly and wore creaking shoes .They were always eager to talk or gossip. They would wait for their turns and back to officers after collecting their letters.
