If she was raised Jewish, which I presume that she was, she would be aware of Jewish persecution from ancient times. Tisha B’Av is a holiday in the summer where Jews mourn the loss of the first and second Temples, however, I am not sure if this was celebrated in her situation. However, she certainly would be aware of persecution from the parshas alone. Every year the Jewish people read the Torah in sections each week, and that persecution is in there.
