According to Mikhail Bakhtin words – the basic components of any language – do not have any abstract significance on their own. They are determined by a person’s relationship with his/her peers and his/her culture. Language is a developing concept that is constantly molded by culture and history.

Bakhtin also treats language as a common entity. In other words, language does not belong to a single individual or group. The words of a language become meaningful only if they are used in conversation with other people.
