Answer:

Franz was not happy at all. He wasn't happy due to two resons:

  • As M. Hamel ( teacher ) had asked all students to prepare for participles and Franz did not even know the first word of it.
  • His day also started with scolding.

He thought for a moment of running away from school as the day was really pleasant and birds were chirping and the Prussian soldiers were drilling back in the ground. All these things looked more tempting to Franz than the rule of participles.

Answer:

Franz’s feelings, as he set out for school were very bright. There were many temptations enticing him not to go to school that day. The first temptation was his lack of preparation for the test on participles. Apart from it, there were other temptations. It was very warm and bright. The birds were chirping at the edge of the woods; and in the open field back of the saw-mill the Prussian soldiers were drilling. It was all much more tempting than the rule for participles, but he had the strength to resist, and hurried off to school.
