The French wanted to emulate the American Revolution except instead of breaking away from a foreign government, they want to upset the French Monarchy and install a government like the U.S. did.

Nearly all revolutions are initiated by the Middle Class, and France was no exception. A central government was established and they tried to develop a constitution. The king and his family were executed.

Soon, the revolution turned into a blood bath. Much of the royalty was rounded up and tried for various crimes and 50% of the royalty wisely left France, many never to return. Thus the intellectual core of France was destroyed by the initial movements toward democracy.

The revolutionary cause was used by greedy people much the way the Salem Witchcraft trials were. People accuse other people (who owned land they wanted) of disloyalty and were able to have owners butchered so they could seize land. The amount of outright criminal activity exceeded “authorized authority’ and the revolution turned into a absolute anarchy which was reflected in public by beheading a large number of both royals and the middle class.

There was no money in the French treasury, the government existed on the basis of borrowed money and this was a significant problem. Originally, this problem was solved by seizing all church property and goods and converting them to cash.

In a few years, Napoleon convinced the Assembly he should be elected monarch or dictator, and he soon resolved the problems on a national scale, then led the nation into war which united the society. Under Napoleon, the nation flowered briefly and conquered many other nations which enriched the treasure and security of France.

France never recovered from the damage of the revolution. A constitution was not signed until in the 1960s. The country still suffers from much intellectual blight, but this did not stop the Russians from repeating the entire scenario again in 1917.
