The number zero performs two functions. One reflects an absence - I have no sheep  - and secondly the function of what is called a place holder. I might have no tens of sheep, no single sheep, but I do have one hundred sheep. I could write One Hundred sheep or, much more simply, 100 sheep. Writing the "1" without the place holder zeroes would not convey the right meaning. It is the invention of zero as "place holder" which revolutionised counting. I also give you the thought that the confusion in English about the meaning of the words "This Thursday" and "Next Thursday" are a distant echo of the lack of zero in common usage in Rome.

(Hope it helps)
