interest in alchemy combined with an age of powerless women gave way to renewed belief in mythological and supernatural occurrences including a belief in the powers of witchcraft. Witches in myths were always female as they were believed to be more susceptible to the Devil. Many unexplained natural disasters took place such as the bubonic plague and people of the Renaissance believed witchcraft was responsible. The first books ever printed were bibles and others contained themes of religion. Many of the books printed encouraged ideas about witches which lead to hysteria and witch hunts taking place. Other books of the new thinking era included ideas around astrology and alchemy which intensified the interest in witches even more.
Belief in the Great Chain of Being continued where everything in the universe was placed in a hierarchical order.
