A reserved forest (also called reserve forest) and protected forest in India are terms denoting forests accorded a certain degree of protection. ... Many forests which came under the jurisdiction of the Government of India during the political integration of India were initially granted such protection.As a result, several jhum cultivators moved away to other areas and lifestyles. Colonial officials decided to give jhum cultivators small patches of land in the forests to cultivate, on the condition that they would have to provide labour to the Forest Department.
