Shrenis was a group of merchants, traders and craftsmen in the sense of Ancient India. In general, for a certain group of individuals engaged in the same vocation or job, a different shreni existed. Often shrenis were linked to guilds.  Persons involved in life destroying activities such as fishing and hunting and fishing, however did not form any shreni.

Explanation:

  • Well known references to the shreni of the 5th century BC were found and texts concerning hunaina and malika discussed the presence of shreni and the transformation of whole shreni to Buddhism or Jainism. Some shrenis, who were custodians and banks of religious and other contributions, became very wealthy for some time.
  • The ivory carvers of Vidisha (located in the present Indian State of Madhya Pradesh) were one of the most frequently referred shreni. The company is approved for the building of the south gate of the Stupa at Sanchi and provides financial support.
  • There are scholars who believe that since the unique tradition and trade secrets of each economic activity and craft were created, shrenis have been developed to protect the same people and the parents have passed the same to the children. The girls were removed from the Shreni, as they went to  their husband's place once married, and as once married they went to their husbands’ homes, and were prone to reveal  the trade secrets to the families of their husbands.
