Aristotle said that Aeschylus was known as the second actor (deuteragonist), and that Sophocles was known as the third (tritagonist). According to the Greek Theatre, the Greek playwrights never used more than three actors.
The deuteragonist often switch between supporting and opposing the protagonist, depending on the deuteragonist's own conflict or plot.
A tritagonist often act as the instigator or cause of the sufferings of the protagonist. Despite being the least sympathetic character of the drama, he or she occasions the situations by which pity and sympathy for the protagonist are excited.
