Following were the adverse effects by nij system:
1.The growing of Indigo leads to infertility of land and hence minimised their chances of growing other crops.
2.The growing of Indigo requires large and fertile land but the area was already dense and no further place for its expansion.Thus planters leased the land around the indigo factory, and evict the peasants from that area. But this resulted in to constant conflicts and tension.
3.A large indigo plantation requires high capital input, labour, machineries and maintainance.It was a difficult task to invest such a huge amount.
