According to the British, there were many practical and moral benefits to the Indians..

They saw India as an uncivilized country that needed to be civilised ... they wanted to change the tastes , values and culture of the Indians by doing this. By doing this Indians would admire British goods increasing demand of British goods... also they wanted to produce honest clerks for their administration.. they felt that (specially Thomas Macaulay) this would introduce them to advancements in western science and philosophy as they would be able to read one of the finest literatures that the world had produced... they felt that oriental knowledge was unscientific, light-hearted and non-serious..they felt that it was full of errors .. they argued that the whole of the knowledge of India and Arabia was equal to the knowledge of only one shelf of European knowledge.....
