  • As noted above, Europe became the main arena of conflict between the superpowers. In some cases, the superpowers used their military power to bring countries into their respective alliances. Soviet intervention in east Europe provides an example.

The arenas of the Cold War refer to areas where crisis and war occurred/ threatened to occur between the alliance systems but did not cross certain limits. The cold war was responsible for several "shooting wars"

Explanation:

  • The  super powers USA and USSR wanted to extend their influence in different parts of the globe. Therefore they had "decided" to take assistance from "smaller nations", In turn these smaller nations were assured weapons, protection, & economic assistance against their "local adversaries", who were mostly the "regional neighbors"
  • The nations  of the "Eastern Europe" had joined the USSR camp and were known as the "Eastern Alliance". While, most nations of the "Western Europe" had aligned with USA and were known as the "Western Alliance"
  • The two superpowers had come into "direct confrontations" in Korea (1950 to 1953), "Berlin" (1958 to 1962) and "Congo" ( early 1960s). Several people had died in arenas such as Afghanistan, Vietnam & Korea
  • The Cuban Missile crisis had taken place in the year 1962.  In a few case "huge military build ups" were "reported"
  • "USSR & USA" had decided to "colloborate" in "eliminating" or "limiting" certain kinds of "nuclear & non-nuclear weapons". Both these superpowers had signed 3 key agreements which were (a) Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) (b) Limited Test Ban Treaty (LTBT) & (c) Anti- Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABMT)
  • In several cases, "diplomatic communication between "super powers" could not be "sustained" & had contributed to "misunderstandings. Pandit Nehru , one of the leaders of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) played a crucial role in "mediating" between 2 "Koreas". In Congo, the "UN General Secretary" had played a "key mediatory role"
